 Care & Maintenance

Although Western Red Cedar will weather over time to a silver gray color that might be appealing from an architectural perspective, we believe that by applying some kind of protective finish within 2 weeks of assembly (weather permitting) provides the best results both from an aesthetic and performance point of view.

Even after applying an exterior finish to your Cedarshed product, discoloration will occur over time. Usually dirt is the most common cause of discoloration and can easily be removed with a mild detergent using a brush.

Care and Maintenance
There are a number of exterior finishes available in most geographic areas that will extend the service life of the exterior siding on our products.

Expected Life
The following choices are available, shown here with their expected lifetimes:

• Water-repellent preservative and oil
(with addition of fungicide)
1-2 years

• Semi-transparent stain
(latex oil-based)
3 years

• Solid color stain -100% acrylic latex
(apply stain blocking primer first)
4-5 years

• Paint -100% acrylic formulation
(apply an oil-based primer first)
up to 10 years
Results will vary and are for average locations in the United States.

Discoloration & Stains
Even after applying an exterior finish to your Cedarshed product, discoloration will occur over time.

Usually dirt is the most common cause of discoloration and can easily be removed with a mild detergent using a brush.

Water stains can also occur and can be difficult to remove. Using an oxalic acid solution sometimes works.

How Much Exterior Finish Will Be Required?
On average, plan on using approximately 1- 2 gallons of exterior finish to completely coat the outside of your Cedarshed Product. This does not include the shingle roof or the inside which is optional and, in our opinion, not required.
